33 Moons, 33 Visions

On top of creating fairground rides and games, Luna Luna’s original cohort of artists were asked to contribute a unique moon graphic to the 1987 event.

Here they lie, on the archival Luna Monde poster from 1987. A dazzling representation of the visions and voices behind the first-ever art amusement park, from Lichtenstein to Scharf to Hockney and beyond.

Jean-Michel
Basquiat

For Luna Luna, Basquiat designed a Ferris wheel on which recurrent subjects from his earlier work appear. The wheel is accompanied by Miles Davis’s 1986 song “Tutu.”

Keith Haring

Haring designed a brightly colored carousel featuring three-dimensional versions of the characters from his iconic line drawings for the audience to ride. These characters also appeared on large tarps displayed throughout the park.

Roy Lichtenstein

For Luna Luna, Lichtenstein contributed exterior panels for a glass labyrinth in style with his 1985 "Perfect/Imperfect" series.

David Hockney

Hockney designed a cylindrical forest pavilion made of panels painted with multicolored, geometric trees.

Salvador Dalí

For Luna Luna, Dalí created a geodesic surrealist funhouse dome with a mirrored interior.
